It is hard to miss the history of Cornwall, from tall ships and smugglers to tin mines and satellites - its all here. Every little town it seems has a museum to boast, perfect for a rainy day or for the generally curious. In my home town of Lostwithiel we have history in spades. Our ruin of Restormel Castle, the Duchy Palace once home of the Black Prince and even our tranquil river, a very long time ago, was the scene of tall ships and bustling commerce making Lostwithiel an important place, in fact the capitol of Cornwall!  The two roomed museum in the heart of town does a wonderful job of exploring the many layers of this little town and it got me thinking about what might be the best museums in Cornwall to see.  Let's go big first, well put together and interactive, the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth has plenty to captivate and inform, a great place for all the ages. Currently focusing on a pirate theme, kids will love diving into the history of Cornwall's checkered

Up and down the country communities are celebrating with their carnival weeks, this being Cornwall we also have plenty of regattas to enjoy. Regattas are more than just boat races, with all sorts of competitions and entertainment, yummy food and music. Fowey's one is the closest to me and is probably one of the best, people come from miles around. From Sunday 13th to Saturday 19th of August, Fowey's Regatta is the place to see some beautiful boats. There will be dingy races, fishing boats, cruisers and Troys - a sailing boat built only in Fowey. This event has seen a few royals attend in the past, including our late queen and Victoria and Albert, it dates way back to 1835.  Another place I just love to go (especially in the warm summer evenings) is Charlestown. Famed for many period dramas as the go-to harbour location, they always have some beautiful boats to peruse. When thinking about what to bring you this month from the jewel that is Cornwall I settled on beer. We have a community of great brands growing in reputation and influence. You see my brother works for the much adored Beer Gonzo in Coventry and when he comes home I like to show him the new beers I might have found and the best places to drink them. Often, I must confess, initially choosing them (being a graphic designer) based on my love of packaging! Together we have found that Cornwall has plenty to offer the discerning palette. Here are some of the best brews to sample, views to enjoy as you drink and tours to embark on.  First up breweries, this is an ever growing list, but top has to be Verdant in Penryn. Going now since 2014 this independent is making a name for itself. Strong flavours packed with interest, one to recommend.  Perhaps the most well known breweries in our neck of the woods are Sharp's , St Austell and Skinners (recently rescued by Goodh Brewing co). This mini heat wave has really shown Cornwall off at its best, I took the opportunity to spend a long weekend with my mum in St Ives and it didn't disappoint!  I had been to this tourist hot spot just last September and it was rather wonderful, so when my mum and I needed some R&R this was the place I booked.  True, the weather was rather spectacular, and it really isn't always the case in Cornwall, but St Ives just felt like a mini piece of paradise on our long weekend away.  We picked a self catering place about 15 mins up a steep hill (oops), but the house was light and airy with a garden and comfy beds, all we needed after our epic climb. The first night we dined in style, I treated mum to a meal at the famous Porthmeor Beach Cafe with a sea view and a delicious tapas menu. Well May has been filled so far with pageantry and picnics but the weather has been rather hit and miss! The bank holiday just gone was a bit of a wash out, not to be discouraged, I took my mum to Ethy House in Lerryn to explore just the most beautiful bluebell woods.  Rarely open to the public, Ethy House is on the road between Lostwithiel and Lerryn and has views (on a non-mizzely day) to the rolling hills and valley below. My mum and I donned boots and cagoules and popped Bren the border terrier on his lead and set off. The house is Georgian and has an Italian feel with a romantic balcony and lovely vistas.  We wound our way through a little maze and entered Ethy Woods. What a sight! Bluebells as far as the eye could see. The scent hang in the air accompanied by bird song.  Rhododendron trees displayed their vivid colour, magnolias too, such stillness and delight everywhere you looked. There's so much see and do, I have just picked a few events up and down the county that will hopefully provide something for everyone! 1) Have you heard of Discovering42? I love March in Cornwall, so many spring flowers are popping up everywhere, there is just the hint of that lovely warm sunshine, plus the possibility of snow. It also feels like Cornwall begins to open up and for us locals, a sunny day means places like popular St Ives or Falmouth radiate holiday fun. There are plenty of events up and down the county to mark high days and holidays, but what has caught my eye this month actually only opens on the 31st of March, but it looks worth the wait! Pirates! A brand new exhibition at Cornwall's Maritime Museum looks worthy of a visit. For years the folklore of pirates has provided fodder for books, movies and the imagination, this year the museum seeks to go under the surface and find out the truth behind the tall tales.  It has been quite a while since I have visited the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth but I think it really uses its space well, creating exhibitions that engage on an impressive scale.
