This is why I love living in Cornwall: a routine appointment can turn into a beautiful adventure! I had to take my mum to the hospital for a check-up. As it was early in the morning and already a bit of a trek for us to get there, we thought, let's make a day of it. Mum wanted peace and tranquillity, so the Helford River came to mind. It really is that perfect escape, a little bubble of old-world beauty that I just love to explore. I did my studies in Falmouth at the art college and had popped across the water to explore this area a little then, but it had been a while. This corner of Cornwall boasts the beautiful Trebah and Glendurgan gardens, both stunningly cultivated landscapes with little beaches of their own. Charlestown harbour It was so lovely to have my brother visit in December. We enjoyed some proper sibling time, revisiting a few favourite haunts and indulging his passion for good coffee and beer. I thought the best plan was a little tour of some fine local establishments, enjoying the wonderful views in between the showers. Having grown up in Cornwall, my brother is no stranger to these parts, but these days it is a modern metropolis that he calls home. Well, Coventry actually, up country. Trips down here are rare but thoroughly enjoyed by us all, so I was glad to hang out with my kid brother and catch up. The Standard Inn on The Roseland Visiting Cornwall in winter is definitely different to the rest of the year. Cornwall may be at its brightest in the warm summer sun, but I wouldn't discount our winter wonders. Granted, it is warmer (though we do get some snow, especially on the moors) but the magic of winter can still be enjoyed. Cosy pubs galore, watching storm waters rage with a frothy hot chocolate and a crackling fire can't be beat.  Ice skating at the Eden Project For a traditionally wintery experience, ice skating is a firm family favourite. January is here and winter is in full swing. Coastal walks and village wanderings are perfectly fitting for this season, however I don't know about you but I require somewhere cosy to warm myself after too much fresh Cornish air. Although it's not the cold snap we were experiencing, still, here are a few of the best pubs in Cornwall to retreat to, when looking at the view is as welcome as walking in it. We do love a good pub in the UK don't we. From local ales to home cooked food (and gastro excellence more often than not). A favourite from my neck of the woods is the Rashleigh Inn at Polkerris beach. It has it all, that sea view, roaring fire and resident cat. You could walk from either direction, I often park up at Par beach and walk the short distance across the coastal path ending at the pub for a drink. We are having a real spell of gorgeously Spring weather, barely any of those April showers which is pretty handy as its all about eating outdoors at the moment in England. All be it a little fresh out (bring those jumpers), it feels good to be a bit more social again.  Many have missed a good pint at their local so I thought it might be nice to highlight some of the best places in Cornwall to sit and take in the outdoor atmosphere.  I may be biased, as this one is near me! I just love watching the sun set at Polkerris beach enjoying some chips at the Rashleigh Inn (pictured above), not sure I should be promoting one of my happy places, so don't tell anyone ;)  The Pandora Inn was a favourite in my student days in Falmouth. Full of character, a thatched roof and wobbly walls, the inside is perfect escapism. Outside though you can sip a cold beer or glass of wine on the pontoon over looking Restronguet Creek. Perfect.
