All Things Beer in Cornwall

Best Beer in Cornwall

When thinking about what to bring you this month from the jewel that is Cornwall I settled on beer. We have a community of great brands growing in reputation and influence. You see my brother works for the much adored Beer Gonzo in Coventry and when he comes home I like to show him the new beers I might have found and the best places to drink them. Often, I must confess, initially choosing them (being a graphic designer) based on my love of packaging! Together we have found that Cornwall has plenty to offer the discerning palette. Here are some of the best brews to sample, views to enjoy as you drink and tours to embark on.

Best Cornish Breweries

First up breweries, this is an ever growing list, but top has to be Verdant in Penryn. Going now since 2014 this independent is making a name for itself. Strong flavours packed with interest, one to recommend.

Perhaps the most well known breweries in our neck of the woods are Sharp's, St Austell and Skinners (recently rescued by Goodh Brewing co). Sharp's are located in the lovely Rock on the North coast of Cornwall, passionate about our county their beers include the famous Doom Bar and Offshore.

St Austell Brewery are definitely the veterans, founded in 1851 this brewery is still independent and family owned. A tour round their St Austell site is well worth it, and a chance to sample their many awarding winning beers.

Black Flag Brewery

Other breweries to note are Lacuna (committed to zero carbon brewing), Harbour Brewing, Black Flag in Perranporth and Pipeline in St Agnes.

Red Elephant Beer Cellar Cornwall

When it comes to tasting, if you are looking for Cornish beers (and the best of the rest) then a trip to Red Elephant Beer Cellar and Tasting Room in Truro is a good place to start. Around 250 different bottles and cans await as well as 10 beers on tap.

If drinking with a view is high on your list, we really are spoilt for choice in Cornwall. The Watering Hole in Perranporth is literally on the beach. A view I recently sampled, The Godolphin in Marazion is quite the draw with St Micheal's Mount slap bang in front of you.

In St Ives one of the oldest pubs and always very popular is the Sloop Inn, right on the harbour, a truly Cornish way to enjoy your pint. (St Ives also has a Belgium bar, Bier Huis Grand Cafe and a great spirit and beer shop, Johns).

Near Newquay there are many potentials but the Bowgie Inn boasts an impressive view. From my student days in Falmouth I have a fondness for Chain Locker and just up the road the pretty thatched Pandora Inn. The Port William at Trebarwith is also a perfect spot.

Driftwood brewery

Other pubs to mention are the Blue Anchor in Helston famed for its traditional ales, Ship Inn in Porthleven and the Seven Stars in Falmouth and The Working Boat also in Falmouth, all known to be good for beer. Driftwood Spars in St Agnes can even design a special brew for your wedding day!
