Wild & Free Cornish Campers is a family-run business based in Wadebridge, North Cornwall. Their lovingly restored 1974 VW Westfalia, Pip, offers all the character of a classic campervan with the practical touches needed for a comfortable holiday.

Pip sleeps up to four, with a rock and roll bed for two adults and a pop-top bed for two primary-age children or one adult. Inside there is a two-hob cooker, sink, water tank, fridge and freezer, kettle and cooking equipment. A table and chairs make outdoor meals easy, while the retro radio has Bluetooth for music, calls and navigation.

Well-behaved dogs can join the adventure too, subject to checking that Pip's compact and cosy space will be suitable for them. That makes her an appealing choice for couples, small families and dog owners looking for a different kind of Cornwall holiday.

Why a campervan suits Cornwall

A campervan makes the journey part of the holiday. Cornwall's roads often take longer than the map suggests, so it helps to slow down and enjoy what appears along the way. A beach, an unexpected view or a picnic spot can shape the whole day.

There is still some planning involved. Overnight stays should be at campsites or authorised locations, and local parking restrictions need to be checked. But having a familiar little home on wheels gives you the flexibility to explore different parts of the county without packing and unpacking at every stop. It also offers some welcome shelter when the Cornish weather refuses to cooperate.

I do love these campervans. A friend had one when I was at art college in Plymouth and we would all pile in for an adventure. Perhaps that nostalgia is part of their appeal, but some of our best family memories in Cornwall have also come from not quite knowing where we were going: random country lanes, surprising views and picnic spots we never wanted to leave.
