Autumnal Walks In Cornwall

Tehidy Woods

October has definitely brought the cold! Our Indian summer is sadly over but this time of year holds it's own romance. With Covid restrictions still in place there's no reason why we can't still enjoy the great outdoors. If there is one thing 2020 has taught me then that's to be resourceful, and to make the most of what we have.

The fresh air provides an extra layer of safety when we are out with friends, keeping that 2 metre distance of course with those not in your household. I have to say woodland walks are some of my favourite.

Cardinham Woods in Autumn

Where I live we have lovely patches of woodland to explore but sometimes I like to go a little further afield. The likes of Bodmin's Cardinham Woods is always a favourite. You do need to pay for parking but the cafe serves warming drinks and tasty cakes, ideal after a bracing stroll. I still haven't explored all this wood has to offer yet but the views as you climb higher over the treetops are truly rewarding.

Lanhydrock in the winter

Also in mid Cornwall we have the parkland around Lanhydrock House. Because of Covid you do need to book when visiting the estate from the National Trust website, but there is plenty to explore. In more normal times I have driven my sister up there to do a park run (I just walked around!), its spectacular on a crisp morning with the mist lingering at the corners.

If you haven't ever visited the Lost Gardens of Heligan then you really should. Again, currently you need to book before you come, but it really is a gem in Cornwall. I like the differing styles of garden that you can explore in this one place. The Victorian garden with its vegetables, the woodland walk with the famous art sculptures nestled in the landscape, the orchard and of course the boardwalk with its exotic palms.

Tehidy Woods is a popular choice come bluebell season, in autumn too this is a lovely destination for a stroll. Pop on your wellies and crunch through the leaves, spot the squirrels and admire the lakes, its a wildlife haven.

Golitha Falls

Bodmin moor is a place I do tend to gravitate to on those cooler days, it just seems to fit the mood. There is something about the colours of the landscape together with those handsome hairy cows all golden brown! Goltiha Falls is a treat with it's cascading water and ancient trees. You'll find Inkie's Smokehouse is in the carpark and they do amazing pulled pork rolls. Just doing takeaway at the moment, but best to check their Facebook page for up to date opening hours.

Walks around Zennor

The coast is magical no matter the season, walking the coastal path (though not on those really really windy days!) is great as long as you wrap up warm. Be that around the far west of Zennor, the colours are amazing, the famous Kymance cove on the Lizard or from King Arthur's castle at Tintagel to Boscastle. There is no shortage of views to take your breath away.

I hope you get to explore some of this precious county in the most golden of all seasons!
