A Warm September Welcome

After a lovely sunny bank holiday here in Cornwall, today, although filled with golden light, has Autumn's familiar chill. The first of September marks a change. Most children will be heading back to school soon which helps at least give this part of 2020 some familiar structure.

My family and I managed to successfully find some quieter corners of Cornwall to explore over the weekend and it is really lovely seeing more of our favourite places opening up. The world has changed, how we socialise, how we holiday, how we unwind. It just takes more planning, more consideration but wonderful memories can still be made.

So what can you do in Cornwall in September? Plenty! My little town of Lostwithiel never really felt that empty over lock down, I think people stayed local and small which has benefitted many of our independent businesses. Plus business owners have been quick to adapt in rather brilliant ways. So all those little quirky towns and villages are still there, still fabulous places to explore and meander through little streets. It's just about respecting the social distancing rules.

Cornwall has over 300 beaches and more than 250 miles of coastline. Granted not all are accessible to everyone but there is so much beauty to explore. The moors are vast and spacious, plenty of room to discover the wilder side of Cornwall.

The much loved world of entertainment is slowly and sensibly coming alive again. The Minack Theatre is open for business, ideally suited with its stunning outdoor location. Indoor theatres are also staging intelligently and safely thought-out productions to rave reviews. The much loved Kneehigh Theatre have been thinking outside the box with lockdown movies and their Walk With Me app, focusing on what they do best, telling stories. Sterts Theatre at Liskeard have been putting on performances in their tent and are announcing a new autumn season soon.

Even some restaurants and eateries are carrying on with promotions to encourage people to eat out, footing the bill themselves. There's no shortage of great places to eat in Cornwall, if you are not comfortable with eating in then nothing beats fish and chips by the coast!

I love the National Trust, its so nice to see the houses and gardens opening again. You must book first so they can manage numbers, but it's great to be able to access these wonderful spaces once more. Near us we have Lanhydrock estate, with cycle trails, woodland, gardens and a Victorian home that is a gem to explore. English Heritage too are opening up sites, near me this means Restormel Castle, a lovely ruins with an awesome view. Better known are Tintagel Castle and Pendennis Castle, both welcoming visitors.

Up and down the county there is much to see, from St Micheal's Mount to Mount Edgcumbe Country Park. Wishing you a safe and really special September in wonderful Cornwall!
