Lost Gardens of Heligan by Bike

Bike to Heligan with Pentewan Cycle Hire

Cycle to Heligan from Pentewan with an electric bike

I love the Lost Gardens of Heligan! I need to plan another trip, it has been too long. I would normally travel by car but recently I realised there is another way. If you are a keen cyclist then there is a cycle route from St Austell or Mevagissey, and if you call in at the beautiful coastal village of Pentewan then you can hire a bike. What caught my eye recently is that they now offer electric bikes, and considering the hilly climb to these majestic gardens, that is a real temptation!

Ice creams, coffee and a picnic area at Pentewan Cycle Hire

Cornwall bike hire in Pentewan with a lovely picnic area by the river

For Cornwall bike hire Pentewan is pretty perfect, the friendly new owners have made a few changes, such as the addition of a great coffee machine. With ice-creams too, whether the weather is hot or cold the hire hut is welcoming and has a lovely picnic area by the river.

There are a few different trails in Cornwall, the famous Camel Trail which although beautiful can be a bit busy. Further south you can travel around the old tram ways and see a more industrial but equally interesting side to Cornwall. Why I think Pentewan Valley Cycle Hire is great though is the variety of trails you can do from the village. The main route is flat and idyllic, following the river in an easy to do route. It's great for families with dappled shade. Or you can head to St Austell and from there either join the Clay Trails, visit ancient Charlestown or explore the world-class attraction that is Eden. Cycling to Mevagissey is a great way to immerse yourself into that old school fishing village charm. Plenty of cafés and pubs to refresh yourself!

If you pick Heligan as your destination, a garden of real variety awaits you. The cycle route is all off-road which makes it quite a safe jaunt with plenty to see once you arrive. From formal Victorian walled gardens to lovely rolling orchards and woodland walks - including that sleeping lady - plus a tropical treat at the end with boardwalks and giant palms! The 200 acres once neglected are now lovingly restored. Hailed by The Times as the 'garden restoration of the century', but even on popular days you can find yourself a quiet corner. Exotic plants capture the imagination and a delicious tearoom and a good little shop are a real plus (I'm all about the tea room!)

The multi award-wining garden is a such a delight and what better way to arrive than by bike, I must say, I am pretty keen on those electric ones...
