Made in Cornwall

When this article was first published, Bromleighs was celebrating 25 years in business. When you think of ‘made in Cornwall’, I confess I often imagine tasty food and drink, or perhaps arts and crafts, but there are so many other businesses tucked away in our fair county that have been thriving for years and deserve the spotlight.

With a perfect mix of products and bespoke commissions, Bromleighs created handmade lighting including pendants, wall lights and table lights. Although the range was wide, I loved the industrial style of the wrought metal switches and fixtures. That heritage feel meant their wares could be seen in historic homes up and down the country, and were often favoured by the National Trust.

They took raw materials, such as locally sourced copper, pewter and brass, and turned them into beautifully finished switches and sockets. These little details can make a house feel complete and considered. They speak of quality and, in a historic home, won’t jar with their surroundings. At the time, Bromleighs was proud to be Cornish, making artisan wares in its workshop using traditional cutting and finishing methods.

They did not only look to the past. Bromleighs also had a contemporary Profile collection that felt effortless and elegant. The clear light switches worked particularly well over extravagant wallpaper without detracting from the print. At the time, it was a great example of the skilled and varied makers working in Cornwall.
