Cornwall in October

Encounter Cornwall SUP as the sun sets

Oh I love this time of year, the colour, the crunch under foot, the invigorating air. As long as I am armed with plenty of layers, and the promise of a hot chocolate, there is no place better to explore in October than Cornwall.

As it is a tad warmer down here, the sea having had a summer of sun is ripe for a dip. From sea-swimming to surfing, October is a great time to be on or in the water (especially if you have a decent wetsuit!)

Korev Surfing Championships

Watersports in Rock

Head to Fistral beach 7th-8th of October and you can watch the Korev Surfing Championships. If you prefer your water a little more calm, there are plenty of places where you can hire a kayak or take up SUP. Try the Camel Ski School at Rock or perhaps Encounter Cornwall at Golant near Fowey, such a peaceful spot.

Sunset on Polkerris beach

More beaches welcome dogs this time of year and that just opens up so many walking opportunities for our fury friends. I love walking the coastal path from Par to Polkerris and finishing with a drink at the Rashleigh Inn, watching the sun set.

Kernow Springs Nordic Spa in Wadebridge

Of course if you want to embrace the cold as our Nordic neighbours do, head to Kernow Springs Nordic Spa at Wadebridge's Saltbox. They have concocted the perfect mix of warming saunas, cold plunges and woodfired hot tubs! Feel invigorated and rejuvenated and ready for whatever the season brings.

Falmouth oyster festival

Food from Cornwall at Falmouth Oyster festival

Some of the more touristy areas may close down for the season but Cornwall has a wealth of foodie haven's still to explore. For festival fun head to Falmouth for the Oyster Festival 12th-15th October or enter the season with 'bucket loads of beer, bratwurst and brass' at St Ives Beer & Bird's Oktoberfest 7th October.

Beer and Bird Oktoberfest

Fireworks at Lappa Valley

Something for all the family, the lovely Lappa Valley is a great day out at any time with its adorable railway, but Friday 27th and Saturday 28th of October they host a Grand Firework Display. I expect 'oohs' and 'aaahs' will abound.

Bedruthan Hotel ideal for storm watching

Port William Pub Trebarwith Strand

When it all gets a bit windy and wet there are plenty of places to explore indoors. Eden is great if you are in need of some warmth! Art galleries and museums provide good distraction on wash-out days but nothing beats a warming drink as you storm-watch behind a pane of glass, Bedruthan Hotel is a great place, so is the Port William pub at Trebarwith Strand.

The Eden Project

From foraging to flower arranging, October still can be a hive of activity. The beauty is the roads are quieter and chose the right beach and it can all be yours!
