Plenty to do in Cornwall this January

owl at Paradise Park Cornwall

Welcome to 2024! As we bounce (or roll, depending on how much you are indulged) into this leap year I thought it might be nice to check out what great Cornish attractions are open in Winter. Being a tourist hotspot plenty of places do close for the season. After all, for those working in tourism it is a well earned rest! However there are plenty of places still welcoming visitors which is fab for locals or savvy holiday makers who recognise Cornwall's charms out of season.

So where to begin, well some of the best places to visit involve animals. They of course don't just disappear outside of those popular times! Paradise Park Wildlife Centre has indoor play as well which can be handy on rainy days with kids. Located at Hayle, this family fun attraction has parrots galore, red pandas, pigmy goats and bald eagles to name a few.

Zac Effron Seal at Cornish Seal Sanctuary

A visit to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is always a treat, you may even spot a celebrity. Dame Judi Dench happened to visit with her family just as a seal was rescued, now baring her name. (Though the seal pictured is apparently named after Zac Efron).

Eden Project in the snow

The Eden Project I actually prefer in the winter months, its calmer and more relaxed. The ice skating is a lovely option, but I also think the domes are great, and still reasonably warm!

Have you tried an escape room before? My friends and I tried one in Prague and it was great fun, I was pretty useless actually! There are a few in Cornwall, Enigma Escape has ones in Truro, Penzance and Falmouth.

Pearls at Cornish Gold

Panning for gold

If you are fond of your jewellery, and a little retail therapy, then Cornwall Gold and Tolgus Mill could be just the right thing to tempt you out in January. An interesting mix of Cornish history, showing where these precious metals came from, and kids activities. They can build a bear or paint a pot, and grown-ups can pick a pearl for their very own piece of jewellery. It is interesting seeing the context of a thing, and having that personal involvement in your finished piece of bling.

Blue Reef Aquarium

Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay is another good shout. I do love aquariums, you enter another world with the colourful lights and calming waters. Blue Reef has an ocean tunnel which is fascinating for old and young alike. Spot sharks, turtles and vibrant fish!

Jubilee Pool

For those who have caught the winter swimming bug, then the Jubilee Pool in Penzance is quite the draw. There is even a geothermal pool, when you need a little more warmth! If swimming outside in January seems mad to you, head to the cafe and enjoy the view, steaming mug of tea in hand.

Just a few suggestions to keep you and the family happy this New Year, as always, Cornwall is a gem of a place no matter the weather, or the season.
